• Tainted & The Lucid

    Anyone who has knowingly passed through a Gateway of one of the Four Realms and survived have been Tainted. The most common Tainted have experienced either the Grave through a near death experience or the Slumber through lucid dreaming. Although, there are numerous ways to enter each of the Realms, know as Gateways, often Baronies seek to create permanent Bridges between them allowing them to physically cross between the Realms. Not all who stand at a Gateway have the will or the strength to step through. It is this that sets the Lucid apart from mortals. Baronies such as the Watchtower are known for their Baptisms, forcing followers into a Gateway testing their resolve.

    Having traveled to one of the four Outer Realms the Lucid are those who have become Tainted but have not yet forced into one of the Baronies. Once a mortal becomes Lucid they become aware of others like themselves and can perceive the overlapping Realms within the Unbound World. The Lucid is Tainted with the essence of the First Realm they experience outside the Unbound World and can learn to draw on its power. Once Tainted the Lucid may enter the other Realms but they will never cause another bond like that of the First Realm.

  • The Baronies

    Baronies are divided by their philosophy and beliefs concerning the Outer Realms, humanity and other Lucids. Baronies do not confined to limited geographical boundaries but possess a significant number of Lucids, often fanatical in nature. The six major Baronies include: Green Ones, Harbingers, Keepers of the Unbound, Spirit Callers, The Templers, and The Watchtower. One new Barony the Church of Unua has cropped up in the last few years. Unlike the older Baronies they openly preach the Eden Dream and the existence of the Outer Realms. So far they have been marginalized by almost every media outlet as being a cult and thoroughly insane. Baronies may also be referred to as: Dukedom, Enclave or Regencies.

  • Church of the Redeemer

    Founded during the Great War in the American South as the Church of the Recamier, the church advocated a return to traditional values and beliefs. As the Great War spread across the globe, the influence of the Church spread with it. At its height in 2134 the Church called for the Purge, a destruction of all modern infrastructure, museums, libraries and data storage centers. The Church was dealt a crippling blow in 2136 when the United Liberties Pact was signed barring all trade with the Church. This event signified the end of the Great War. After the signing of the ULP the Church imploded, possibly due to infighting or other political struggles. Restructuring and renaming itself the Church of the Redeemer it remains a major influence in global politics even if it is only a shadow of the former body.

  • The Great War

    Common history books teach that the Great War began on December 13th, 2022 after a conflict over a disputed oil pipeline between in the Eastern Bloc Alliance, France and Russia. The War is often characterized by eighteen significant conflicts. By the end of the Great War the landscape of the world had changed drastically. A unified Allied States of America (ASA), European Union (EU), and United Socialist Commonwealth (USC) had replaced many of the world’s former nations. However, the damage done to these world powers was crippling. Archeologists continue to theorize on the loss of information and technology from before the Purge. Although taught in schools the Great War has little impact on modern life. Conflicts of the Great War:

  • The Megalopolitan Future

    Overpopulation, cramped quarters, people stacked on top of each other with only thin walls separating them. The modern Megalopolis is a living archeological dig. At the highest strata you have those who can afford to live above their fellow man, enshrined with every pleasure and convenience of a king. Dig a bit further and you find the offices, factories and massive hydroponics farms that sustain the Megalopolis. Below that, you have more apartments but not like those above these are tiny by comparison. This is where the average man has been abandoned.  Down below the run off of the industrial plans, out of sight of those with real power, this is where you will find the homes of the millions required to sustain the lifestyles of the few. How though you might ask.

    Simply put governments lost control. Major corporations rival, even exceed the power of small nations, not that many remain. The Great War saw both the vast consolidation of world power and a global collapse of infrastructure. The super powers of the world are a shadow of their former selves.

    During the Dark Age after the war technological infrastructure was consolidated into modern super-cities. Population exploded and the basic support networks such as public education, medicine and security collapsed. Almost universally the average citizen has a limited or no formal education. The middle class is now all but extinct. Not that most people know what the term means. Unions are a thing of the past along with most labor and employment laws. Workers routinely endure twelve hour days or worse simply to justify their jobs. The modern city is not a place you want to be unemployed in.

    With massive population densities the Megalopolis is a breeding ground for crime, drug abuse and gang warfare. On the streets running with a gang isn’t about power, or respect, it’s about survival. Every other block you’re on another clique’s turf and if they don’t know you, well that’s too bad. Like everything else, these smaller gangs filter up to the crime families who seem to engineer conflict with each other if only to test member’s loyalty.

    It’s not all bad though. Assuming you’re willing to work half a day or more there are unprecedented levels of access to basic luxuries. Homes and apartments include huge entertainment centers with hundreds of television stations and music channels along with internet access. Long distance travel is relatively inexpensive and for those who can afford it, suborbital intercontinental flights take only a few hours. That is, if you can afford it.

    For the rich, the modern landscape is a shark’s paradise. If you have the background for an executive level job the sky’s the limits. Personal bodyguards and an armored limo are just the start. A week at the Qi-Mathews Space Station over Bolivia to ink a multinational deal then it’s off to the Bale Grand Lunar Colony for the celebration. As long as you’re on top why not enjoy it? Just remember if that deal doesn’t go though the company will liquidate your assets terminate the lease on your suite at the TK Arcology and let you figure out how to pay for that ticket back to London. Assuming you even have the courage to face your family again.

    Wealthy or penniless, the safety nets of the twentieth century are long forgotten. The police still serve and protect those that can pay for their protection. Otherwise, you’re on your own. Try to make the best of it.

  • The Eden Prayer

    The world has grown colder over the last century. Since the end of the Great War, huge multinational corporations have risen to power while government rule has grown stifling, stripping away what were once considered basic human rights. Knowledge is a privilege those few who can afford private education or can qualify for corporate schools. In the urban centers of power, billions struggle to carve out a living in the shadow of these monolithic empires.

    Amid the squalor and decay there is another world.

    Rumors of conspiracy and government plots abound on the streets while the news reports only what they’ve been paid to say. Within this cacophony of rumor the Church of Unua has somehow spread the tale of Five Kingdoms.”These five interwoven Realms, the Slumber, the Verdant, the Dark, the Grave and the Unbound, once part of a greater whole the Unua preach that these Realms, can be reunited so humanity can one day transcend the blight and enter the new era. The media dismiss their rants, the Church of the Redeemer sees them as a pagan cult, and others simply call them mad. Even so, their message spreads and new churches crop up in cities across the globe. All unified by a single prayer.

    Through dream I have seen the Slumber.
    Through nightmare I have been cast into the Dark.
    Through life I have found the Verdant.
    Through death I have known the Grave.
    I am Unbound.
    I am Lucid.

    The year is 2202 and paranoia is the rule of the day. Forces just outside the realm of perception move world powers to their will. Those who stop and watch can feel the touch of these powers at work. Governments struggle to rebuild, to recover from the Great War. Huge corporations have become cities-states unto themselves. The Church of the Redeemer, fallen from its glorious ranks continue to swell, filled with disenfranchised workers unaware of the church’s hubris. All of these things move within the nebulous landscape of conspiracy. Yet, the truth exists beyond the realm of man.
    Scattered across the globe are those who have crossed the boarders into the Outer Realms only to return to the Unbound World tainted, a living conduit to the strange energies that control the Realms. This Taint connects them, binds them and drives them. They are the Lucid, those strong enough to transcend the haze of illusion that shadows the world.
    No one knows how many Lucid there are in the world. Some band together for ideological reasons forming Baronies. Their motivations vary widely, from the Eden Dream of the Church of Unua to the Templar’s enlightenment at the edge of a knife. The Realms offer no answers as to who is right and who is wrong.
    The Lucids who have not been culled by the Baronies are a precious commodity. Thrust into a world of mystery, they find themselves infused by the Realms, gifted with new and strange abilities. Their eyes have become attuned to the hidden forces of the world. Sought by the Baronies, some give in hoping for protection. Those with the wit, will and tenacity to do so, run.
    They are out there, on the run, hiding, like you. Close your eyes, reach out and you can feel them. Those with the strength not to give in, who have not been brainwashed by any Barony are the Lucid. Fight, struggle, do what must be done to survive the Unbound World and take control of the strings of reality at your command.
